Dentures replace missing teeth and come in a variety of forms, depending on the specific issues in your individual situation. Dr. Nolan Behr of Colorado Springs, CO, offers several options:

How do dentures work?

Full or partial dentures are made of a gum-colored base made of plastic resin that fits over the bone ridge of missing teeth. The prosthetic restores the appearance and function of natural teeth. Dentures are held in place by a suctioning effect, which is why dentures need to be fitted properly.

Types of Dentures

  • Immediate Dentures: These are temporary dentures placed immediately after tooth extraction to help you transition to dentures because of the muscular readjustment required and natural shrinkage of gums.

  • Conventional Full Dentures: With time, permanent dentures take the shape of your mouth. These dentures are designed to look as much like your natural teeth as possible and restore proper functions for a long time to come.

  • Implant-Supported Overdentures: Your Colorado Springs dentist uses dental implants to secure and increase the stability of a lower or upper denture. Upper jaws need more implants because of lesser bone density.

  • Transitional Partial Dentures: These are temporary removable plastic dentures used as space maintainers while your mouth heals from the tooth extraction.

  • Removable Partial Dentures (RPDs): These metal-based removable partial dentures are made of cast Vitallium, a lighter and less obtrusive material than plastic.

How are dentures made and fitted?

  1. An accurate impression is taken of the top and bottom ridges of your mouth and a lab technician makes the base of the denture at a dental laboratory.
  2. Next, a temporary denture is made for you until your permanent dentures are made.
  3. Lastly, when the permanent dentures are made, Dr. Behr will place them into your mouth and give you a readjustment period until dentures fit properly.
